Why this game?
Synonym/antonym recall is a classic vocabulary-test format and a strong predictor of reading fluency. The SAT and GRE both use it because it forces precise meaning-matching — not just "I know this word" but "I know which meaning is operative."
Strategy tips
- Read the mode first. A synonym round and an antonym round can have inverted answers — same word, opposite right answer. The mode label tells you which direction.
- Eliminate "filler" distractors. Each round has 1 right answer + 1 plausible-but-wrong-direction word + 2 unrelated words. Filter the unrelated ones first.
- Watch for the inverted distractor. If the round asks for "synonym of HAPPY", expect SAD to appear as a tempting wrong choice. Don't fall for it.
